CARDIFF could now feature on the Hollywood big screen after the strongest indication yet that Doctor Who is to be made into a film.
New writer Steven Moffat said he'd love to see the Time Lord in cinemas as long as the movie was "great and fantastic" and that filming doesn't get in the way of making the hit series, which is often shot on location in the city.
Moffat is to replace Russell T. Davies, who revived Doctor Who in 2005, as the lead writer and executive producer for the sci-fi show's fifth series, due to be shown on BBC1 in 2010. Meanwhile Davies will remain in charge of four Doctor Who specials.
At the Edinburgh International Television Festival this weekend, when asked whether he would like to see the series become a film, Moffat said: "I'm not against it.
"A movie is one 90 minutes a year. So yes, so long as it never gets in the way of the show.
"It's been in the cinema, with Peter Cushing. It would be good to see it in the cinema so long as it's great and fantastic."
Scottish-born Moffat revealed that he would love to sign up Steven Spielberg because he is a Doctor Who fan. Plus Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has an outfit of Sylvester McCoy's - the actor who played the seventh Doctor.
Moffat has already written some of the most memorable Doctor Who episodes of recent times. He was previously known for the landmark ITV children's drama Press Gang and Coupling, the award-winning sitcom he created and wrote for BBC2.
Simon Hooper, of Specialists Models and Displays in Cardiff, who provided key props to help the new Dr. Who get off the ground, welcomed the movie possibility.
He said: "We have provided Daleks and components for the TARDIS in the past and I think a one-off move to the screen would be amazing.
"It would take Dr. Who to the next level so should be very successful.
"I think David Tenant is an excellent Doctor, who is perfect for the part because he is eccentric and a nice guy too."
The 1965 film Dr. Who and the Daleks, written by Terry Nation. was filmed at London's Shepperton Studios and starred Peter Cushing who travelled in his Tardis to the Planet Skaro and battled the evil menace of the Daleks.
Next came Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD (1966) in which Cushing was joined by Bernard Cribbins, who played Donna's (Catherine Tate's) grandfather in the latest series.
